THE ONE RULE

Think about this carefully...

OK folks, here is my contribution to the collective 'wisdom' that is the internet. Are you ready for this?

“If it sounds right, it is right!”

What? Is that it?

Well, when it comes down to it, all things musical can be reduced to this bare statement. All musical 'rules' are written down to describe music that already exists. Whether you're talking about sonata form, verse/chorus structure, violin intonation, lyrics, amplifier settings, or just holding down a basic Am guitar chord, if it sounds right, it is right.

Now, there are a few implications. There may be a 'rule' that says what you've done shouldn't work- but if it does, then that's fine. (The reverse is true too: if the 'rules' say it's OK but it still doesn't sound right to you, then change it. You've found the "exception that proves the rule", maybe, or perhaps you're venturing into unfamiliar musical territory.)

However- the final point must be this: you have to be honest with yourself. Don't kid yourself it sounds good if you know in your heart of hearts that it doesn't. No cheating. No settling for second best.

But it's not all bad news. The good bit is that you don't have to know all the 'rules' before you start making music- you just have to make sure your music is 'true to itself' and you will find any rules, guidelines, or 'rules of thumb' you need along the way. Maybe you're also writing your own rules and standards?

Armed with this info you can play guitar, write symphonies, or record whole albums. That doesn't mean it will be easy, but your musicality and sheer hard work will guide you through! If you are listening and looking hard enough, you will find what you need by experimentation and research.
